Municipal Solid Waste (Trash) Removal (MSW)

City Ordinance requires ALL TRASH must be bagged and tied shut. Please make sure ALL cat litter, dog feces, and baby diapers are completely bagged and sealed due to health reasons.

Trash is picked up once a week. Please be aware of any holiday pick up changes due to the city landfill being closed.

Not Allowed In The Landfill: Paint, Waste Oil, Car Batteries, Tires, Pesticides, Herbicides, Or Electronics.

Recycling

Effective June 1st, 2015, our recycling center has started charging the trash haulers a recycling fee. You may have seen this information on Kelo-Land and in the Argus Leader. Cressman Sanitation will not be able to absorb this expense, so we will need to pass on a small recycling fee to our customers. This is a mandatory charge for each customer as well. RECYCLING IS A MANDATED CITY ORDINANCE. It is very important to us that you recycle. Each home and business are required to recycle. If you are unsure what should or should not be recycled, please contact us for more information.

Recycling for all homes and apartments is single stream, meaning all recyclables may be mixed together. Below are all the items, do’s, don’ts, and how to’s of recycling. Recycling is picked every other week in Sioux Falls and every week in Hartford and Humboldt. If your recycling is picked every other week you should have a schedule marked with a 'shaded week' on the calendar that we sent to you. Recycling products need to be set out and visible from the street/alley and accessible to the truck pick up. We do ask residents to use our tip carts. Our carts hook up to the truck, helping to eliminate injuries to the driver. Driver safety is priority for us. If you do not have one we will deliver a tip cart out to you free of charge. Newspaper (with all ads), junk mail, shredded office paper (clear bagged and only office paper in it)
Magazines, catalogs, phone books, paperback books, hardcover books (covers removed)
Corrugated cardboard (empty and flattened), chip board (cereal boxes, shoe boxes, pop boxes, etc.)
Plastic bottles, jugs, tubs, containers
Aluminum cans, foil, trays (clean)
Tin & Steel cans (kitchen type soup & vegetable cans)

Not Taken as Recycling:

NO PLASTIC BAGS (garbage or grocery)
Wax paper, tissue paper, paper towels, paper plates, napkins, furnace filters.
Chip bags, cereal bags, diapers
Any glass other than bottles and jars (ie: no window glass, light bulbs, etc.)
Plastic toys are not recyclable
STYROFOAM-REMOVE AND DISCARD ALL STYROFOAM FROM RECYCLING.

Electronic Recycling:

The following items are NOT allowed in the landfill: Computers, Printers, Scanners, Copier Machines, Fax machines, TV’s, VCR’s, DVD’s, Laser disc players, stereo receivers, air conditioners, or any large appliances. There is a minimum $15.00 charge for hauler to take any of these items.

Lawn Refuse Removal

ALL Grass and Leaves must be in the 30 Gallon Paper yard bags for removal. Yard bags are taken on Fridays. Yard bags are 1-9 bags are $3.50 per bag, and 10+ bags are $3.00 per bag. Branches must be cut to 5’ or shorter, bundled, tied, and will be picked up on your TRASH day, branches should not be included in your yard waste.

2023 Holiday Dates for Trash and Recycling:
If your trash/recycling day falls on or after the holiday(IF HOLIDAY FALLS ON DAYS BETWEEN MON-FRI) in that week only, your trash and recycling will be picked the next day.

Sunday, Jan 1st: New Years Day
Monday, May 29th : Memorial Day (Mon > Tues; Tues > Wed; etc.)
Tuesday, July 4th: Independence Day(Mon > Tues; Tues > Wed; etc.)
Monday, Sept 4th: Labor Day (Mon > Tues; Tues > Wed; etc.)
Thursday, Nov 23rd: Thanksgiving Day (Thurs > Fri; Fri > Sat)

Also, please be aware of any holiday pick up changes due to the city landfill being closed. Branches
Must be cut to 5’ or shorter, bundled, tied, and will be picked up on your trash day. Please call and let us know in advance.

Lawn Refuse Removal:
ALL Grass and Leaves must be in the Paper yard bags for removal. Yard bags are usually taken on Fridays, please call by NOON on Thursday to have your address added to the pickup list. **If you call to have yard waste picked up and you do not have it out on the Friday requested for pickup, we will charge a $5 trip fee! Please have yard waste out by 4:00am Friday morning OR night before and OUT TO THE STREET. Yard Waste pick up starts in the spring (depending when snow melts) and continues through the last Friday of November. We have Yard Waste tip carts available for $25.00/month and we will place you on the weekly yard waste list automatically. If you would like to be on a weekly yard waste list, but do not want a tip cart, the charge will be $25.00/month.

Yard waste prices per bag:
*2-9 bags $3.50/bag (must have a 2-bag minimum; 1 bag will be charged $5.00)
*10 + bags $3.00/bag

Vacation / Snow Days
These days will not be credited unless time missed or gone is over a month. Everyone is credited one month a year, every year!! Its built into your billing.

HOLIDAY WEEKS
Please put trash out by 4am OR NIGHT BEFORE , there are times where we will need to start extra early to ensure all our customers get picked up and for us to make it to the landfill before they close on certain holidays.

HARTFORD

2023 Holiday Dates for Trash and Recycling:

Hartford City Ordinance requires that you have trash and recycling containers to the street. (Ordinance #430, Section 3.0308) Please have your trash and recycling to your curb by 6:45am the day of your pickup. Trash and Recycling are picked up once a week, unless specified otherwise. The City of Sioux Falls Regional Landfill Ordinance states ALL trash, especially cat litter, dog feces, and baby diapers are to be completely bagged and sealed due to health reasons and to reduce potential for littering due to wind and/or the cans tipping over. Also, please place lids on your cans, this helps reduce littering on those windy days. If wind continues to be an issue, please contact us to determine a possible solution.

AS OF NOV 1st IF PLASTIC BAGS IN RECYCLING YOU WILL BE SUBJECT TO FEE BETWEEN $5-$75 FEE

CONTAMINATED RECYCLING**SUBJECT TO EXTRA CHARGES

The city of Hartford provides a free yard waste removal. Please contact the city for that information. Cressman Sanitation can also remove yard waste for additional cost. Yard waste bags are $5/each .
ALL Grass and Leaves must be in the Paper yard bags for removal. DO NOT PUT YARD WASTE IN YOUR TRASH! You could be subject to a fine if you have yard waste in your trash.
